University of St Andrews

Gleeds has worked on a number of projects across the University of St Andrew’s campus.

In 2005-6, Gleeds project managed the construction of a new three storey Arts Faculty building campus. The project was made to the high standard required to satisfy the local planning department’s strict guidelines, fitting neatly amongst the buildings of the historic campus and town.

Its external elevations are a mixture of stonework and high quality curtain walling. Internally, the building is sub-divided into teaching and office space with a high quality fit-out. One of the nuances of the project is that the foundations and part of the steel frame were constructed within an operational plant room.

Gleeds also projected managed the refurbishment of several of the university’s halls of residence, including McIntosh Hall (originally built as the Chattan Hotel in 1921) and the implementation of sustainable solutions for the David Russell Apartments.

Gleeds performed project management, contract administration and quantity surveying duties on the £3m series of internal refurbishments on the university’s 79 North Street space, a listed townhouse built in 1824-5 that contains academic offices, teaching facilities and external student services providers.

This project had to be fully planned, scoped, consented, procured and negotiated in advance in order for it to be capable of delivery within the eight week summer break, and was finished on time, on budget and in excess of aspiration.

Most recently in October 2016, Gleeds was commissioned to project manage the construction of the university’s music centre.
